Mesothelioma is more or less a man-made cancer. The cancer is caused by asbestos which is a naturally found silicate mineral. It is mined out of the earth and put to use in many applications, including cement manufacture, ship building, construction activities etc. The requirement for the material rocketed in the last century due to its many qualities which include insulation capacity, resistance to heat etc. But the minute fibers of the mineral could cause the deadly mesothelioma – a fact which was either not discovered or undisclosed for commercial reasons – and many of the unfortunate workers of that time, who were exposed to asbestos developed mesothelioma. Mesothelioma prognosis is totally hopeless in many of these cases.
