Once upon a time, we thought that diet and exercise were all about managing and burning calories. Over the last couple of decades, the focus on calories has dimmed somewhat, as people also began to pay attention to such factors as fat content, carbohydrates, and a number of other dietary issues. For some people, the importance of watching calorie intake became obsolete and they moved on to a different weight change. This is not the case; the need to count calories is alive and well.

Of course, we will never go back to the old days when calorie was supreme ruler there are of coarse still weight loss products. We understand today that we need to limit our intake of processed foods, eat a variety of vegetables, and avoid excess fat, cholesterol, and carbohydrates. At the same time, we need to limit portion sizes. This is where calories can provide a valuable service these days.

Many diet and exercise programs fail because there is little or no attention to caloric intake for a significant weight change. Many people blithely drink sports drinks and do not worry themselves about the total number of calories they are taking in. The result can be that if the amount of activity does not burn off the excess calories, weight goes up. With extra weight comes the potential for developing a number of health issues.

Counting calories helps us to prevent taking in more than we can reasonably use. Knowing how many calories are in any of our favorite foods can provide us with a guide of how often and how much of those foods to enjoy. What this means is that you do not necessarily have to forgo some of your favorite comfort foods altogether. Instead, you arrange your intake of food for the day to allow yourself to have a reasonably sized portion of that comfort food. As long as you are getting the nutrition you need and converting the food into energy that is utilized, you can enjoy that occasional slice of cake or piece of pie.

For many people, counting calories helps to form the basis of the daily diet. For example, if a man knows he can have 2800 calories and still lose those ten pounds he wants to shed, he can then make food choices that are overall healthy, have a little treat, and still stay within his calorie range. Of course, there is still the need to watch carbs, fats, and cholesterol but making wise choices in the selection of foods that provide reasonable levels of these elements as well as staying under a certain number of calories per day will yield wonderful benefits.
