Since its inception, yoga has been an awesome method of achieving a spiritual experience and exercise the mind and body. It is also known to be an excellent way of achieving good physical health. Unknown to many, though, is the fact that one can eliminate eye strain and fatigue and improve vision by the use of regular eye yoga exercises.
The eyes are an integral part of human function, and if not used correctly, one\’s vision can deteriorate. This blurred vision is usually a result of tension in the eye caused by various things: too much computer use, polluted air exposure, and lack of exercise. This causes the muscles of the eye to weaken and not function properly. Good for us, though, that one can use eye yoga exercises to enable the eye and its muscles to stay flexible and work properly.
A unique aspect of eye yoga exercises is motionlessness of the body. You need to be laid flat and still, head static, eyes open, spine erect and hands resting on your knees or just the lower region of your body. In eye yoga exercises, the only part of the body allowed to move is the part being exercised – the eye. This allows your brain to focus its resources on the eyes and this enhances effectiveness of the eye yoga exercises.
With your body remaining still, gaze around the room for a minute to warm your eyes up. Adjust your eyes so they are looking up as high as they can go and hold this for 5 seconds. Then adjust your gaze down as far as your eyes can go and hold for another 5 seconds. Do this five times total, and remember to stay relaxed and only move your eyes, not your neck or head.
It is important that during eye yoga exercises you remain very calm and relaxed. Don\’t put any unnecessary strain on your eyes or body.
In order to fully work out the entire muscle structure of the eye one must also incorporate the look right, left, and diagonal eye yoga exercises. Focus your eyes to a chosen angle and keep on alternating from left to right in order to contract and extend the eye muscles. Then do the same for the diagonal axes. Repeat the eye yoga exercises four times and incorporate frequent blinking. Finally close your eyes to help relax the eye muscles.
